Accepted Student Days at colleges can be an action-packed day of events. The excitement of being on campus with so much to see and do often leaves little time for students to think about how the campus can best fit their needs and expectations. I believe that accepted student days are most effective when students reflect upon their personal priorities and goals prior to attending. Discovering the campus and understanding engagement areas where a student can quickly transition to college life should be the target along with how they can ultimately thrive over the next four years.
In my fifteen years of college admissions experience, I have realized that most students and their families struggle when it comes to determining “the campus fit.” This is due to a lack of consideration when learning about the key areas of the college or university along with missed opportunities to ask relevant and goal-driven questions.
What are a few areas often overlooked when considering “the campus fit?”
Leadership – University presidents have a very strong influence on the direction of their campus. Some presidents tend to more be active and involved while others may be reclusive. It can be interesting to see the extent of how admissions and other key departments clearly know their president’s fundamental goals. Effective presidents have powerful messages that resonate and are understood by all levels of the campus.
Professors – The professors in a student’s desired major will play an integral role in their academic life and career launch. By understanding a professor’s previous work history and their experiences will provide students a sense of their networking connections. Additionally, for students who are considering research focused majors, it will be important to know the type of research that their future professors have expertise in while helping to determine the best fit for a prospective mentor/mentee relationship.
Admissions Officials – This is one most overlooked areas since admissions officials are often perceived as gatekeepers. Admissions officials are very dedicated professionals and advocates for their students. I have found that admissions officials have extensive institutional knowledge and carefully maintain campus relationships. They are very genuine people and are happy to answer all questions. Building meaningful relationships with admissions officials can benefit students in their decision process, transitioning to campus, and the years ahead that lead up to graduation.
Empowering clients to find “the campus fit,” especially during accepted student days, is one of my strategic goals to help ensure future success.
