For many students, the idea of writing college essays strikes fear in their hearts, but it is a good idea to break down college essays into the basic, bare bones facts, including the number of words required.

So, how long should a college application essay be? This is a great question, but it is not immediately obvious because there are many different types of college essays, and they all have different word count requirements! So, we cannot say, “It should be 550 words, and that is it!”

However, every common type of college essay has a standard word count limit, and it is important to get these straight before you even start writing. We will walk you through everything you need to know about how long a college essay should be so you are not in the dark when you start writing yours.

Why Do College Essay Word Count Limits Exist?

Just like your Honors English teacher might give you a page limit for your next paper, you get the same sort of limit for your college essays. College essay word limits are there by necessity, because if given the opportunity, high schoolers would likely go on and on and on, trying to prove themselves to their dream college. (Can you imagine admissions readers trying to get through thousands of twenty-page college essays? Nuh-uh, never gonna happen.)

Therefore, college essay word count limits are in place not to limit you, but to give you some guidelines and give you enough space to expand your thoughts. In my opinion, 650 words is just about perfect, which is what the main essays typically require.

Different Types of College Essays and Word Counts

Let’s walk through the different types of college essays and word counts, including the Common App, Coalition App, and individual school essays.

Curious How Long Should a College Essay Be? Campus to Career Crossroads Can Help!

Common App Essay Word Count

How long should a college essay be for the Common App?

The Common App is an online application that allows people to apply to over 1,000 colleges and universities with a single application. The Common App offers seven essay prompts with a required maximum of 650 words. There is no minimum, but you obviously shouldn’t submit just a twenty-word Common App essay, also often called the personal essay. You won’t communicate what you need to with so few words. By the way, whatever you do, don’t use ChatGPT to write your entire essay.

In addition to your main essay, you can also add two sections, “challenges and circumstances” and “additional information,” which helps colleges better understand the context of your application and potentially use this information to provide you with support:

  • Challenges and circumstances: You can also answer a “challenges and circumstances” question, which captures a broad array of challenges you might have experienced. First-year students must explain it within 250 words, and the transfer app gives you a 1,250-character maximum to explain any challenges you’ve encountered. For example, you might report that you do not have access to a quiet study space, reliable technology, encounter community disruption (like violence), discrimination, family disruptions (divorce, incarceration, job loss, addiction, death, health troubles), family obligations (like caring for younger siblings), housing instability, military deployment, natural disasters, mental or physical health, and war or other hardships.
  • Additional information: You can also mention any additional information that may impact your application. The “additional information” section also gives you a word or character limit, up to 300 words max, while the transfer application limit is 1,500 characters maximum.

Here is a complete guide to the Common App, including its current essay prompts and how to describe activities.

How to Handle the Common App Word Count Limits

At Campus to Career Crossroads, we recommend getting as close as possible to the 650-word count limit. That way, you are likely communicating as much as possible within the limit and also not making it look way too short. Submitting an essay that is only 300 words looks like you are not trying hard enough, and colleges will definitely take notice if your essay looks a little short.

That said, are we good with a 550-word essay? You bet, especially if it is well thought out and communicates a great message about who you are — and most importantly, as long as you directly answer the prompt!

Coalition App Essay Word Count

The Coalition App is a platform similar to the Common App. It requires between 500 and 650 words, and here are the Coalition App questions:

  1. Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
  2. What interests or excites you? How does it shape who you are now or who you might become in the future?
  3. Describe a time when you had a positive impact on others. What were the challenges? What were the rewards?
  4. Has there been a time when an idea or belief of yours was questioned? How did you respond? What did you learn?
  5. What success have you achieved or obstacle have you faced? What advice would you give a sibling or friend going through a similar experience?
  6. Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.

How to Handle the Common App Word Count Limits

Our guidelines are very similar for the Coalition App. Get as close to 650 words as possible, but if it is a bit less, that is not the end of the world. Our essay expert will help you polish your application so it shines!

Individual School Application Word Count

Some schools require you to apply via their own application and will therefore have different required word counts. Check with each school for its specific word count requirements.

For example, MIT has its own application, and in 2025-2026, it is asking the following short-answer essay questions (100 to 200 words each):

Great Dome of MIT

  • What field of study appeals to you the most right now? Tell us more about why this field of study at MIT appeals to you.
  • We know you lead a busy life, full of activities, many of which are required of you. Tell us about something you do simply for the pleasure of it.
  • While some reach their goals following well-trodden paths, others blaze their own trails achieving the unexpected. In what ways have you done something different than what was expected in your educational journey?
  • MIT brings people with diverse backgrounds together to collaborate, from tackling the world’s biggest challenges to lending a helping hand. Describe one way you have collaborated with others to learn from them, with them, or contribute to your community together.
  • How did you manage a situation or challenge that you didn’t expect? What did you learn from it?

How to Handle the Individual School Word Count Limits

Our guidelines involve getting as close to the word count limit as possible. So, for example, if the individual school word count limit is 200 words, you will want to get as close to 200 words as possible, especially since it might be a little shorter. Try to stretch them as long as possible without putting “filler” into the essay.

Other Types of College Essay Word Counts

Now, what about the other types of college essays you have to knock out?

How Long Should a College Essay Be is More than Writing 101 Knowledge.

Word Counts for Supplemental Essays

Supplemental essay word counts vary, but you will likely see a requirement of 150 to 250 words for short answers and 300 to 400 words for longer essays (you can consider it the length of a long paragraph). Short answer supplemental essays might even be shorter. Write essays that are as close as possible to the maximum limit. Do you see a pattern here?

Here is an example of supplemental essays from the University of Texas at Austin:

These required prompts require you to write forty lines, or about 250-300 words per prompt:

  1. Why are you interested in the major you indicated as your first-choice major?
  2. Think of all the activities — both in and outside of school — that you have been involved with during high school. Which one are you most proud of and why? (Guidance for students: This can include an extracurricular activity, a club/organization, volunteer activity, work or a family responsibility.)

You can also share background on events or special circumstances that you feel may have impacted your high school academic performance.

How to Handle the Supplemental Essays Word Count Limits

Not surprisingly, you will need to get to as close to the limit as possible. In the example above, we would guide you to get as close to 300 words as possible. It can feel difficult to pack everything you want to in 250 words, but that is the challenge, isn’t it? But you can do it! You can sound extremely intelligent while trying to convey information in as few words as possible.

Also, here is another important point: Many supplemental essays require you to convey knowledge about the school and its programs, so ensure you do that. Ensure you are reading and answering the prompt correctly as well!

Word Counts for Honors or Other Scholarship Essays

Many colleges offer scholarships that require an essay to the honors college. For example, for admission to the honors college and the Chancellor’s Scholarship at the University of Indiana at Indianapolis:

Reflecting on your experience as a highly motivated student, in a 400–600 word essay, choose one example from your high school accomplishments and/or activities and explain how it demonstrates why you are a strong candidate for the IU Indianapolis Honors College. In addition, aside from the financial resources, discuss what appeals to you about joining the Honors College. Be sure that your answer demonstrates that you have read about our Honors College Community.

How to Handle the Scholarship Essays Word Count Limits

Again, get as close as possible to the essay limit. In this case, you will need to demonstrate what you know about the program itself, and this should be detailed. Do research, listen to videos, watch social media accounts of students who have gone through the process, and more. Only then can you adequately convey your knowledge of the school/honors program and everything it offers. Also, do not forget to pay attention to what the prompt is asking. Some require you to really pay attention.

Outside Scholarship Essays

Don't Forget to Write Scholarship Essays

What are outside scholarships? Outside scholarships are scholarships that you can apply to that are not connected with colleges and universities. You can find them in the following locations:

  • Local community foundations
  • High school guidance office websites/newsletters
  • Local businesses, banks, and credit unions
  • Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions Club, and other civic organizations
  • Employers (parent and student employers)
  • Regional nonprofits and professional associations
  • State-specific scholarship databases
  • National scholarship search engines (Fastweb, Scholarships.com, BigFuture, Going Merry)
  • Religious organizations and faith-based groups
  • Unions and trade organizations
  • Industry-specific associations related to student’s major
  • Community groups, cultural organizations, and heritage clubs
  • Hospitals, medical groups, and health systems
  • Utility companies or state energy cooperatives
  • Local chambers of commerce

Now, we really can outline how many words you need for outside scholarship essays because they are all different. One scholarship might require a 1,000-word essay, while another one might require a 500-word essay. It is really important to pay attention to the essay requirements, including the prompt.

How to Handle the Outside Scholarship Essays Word Count Limits

Get as close as possible to the essay limit for outside scholarships. Also, do not forget to pay attention to what the prompt is asking. The worst thing you can do is to not directly answer the prompt.

Here is What You Need to Know About Essay Word Counts

In many cases, you cannot go over the word count because you put your answers into a box and it cuts you off. However, some outside scholarships require you to do your own word count. Don’t make this very basic mistake. Learn more about college application mistakes.

FAQs

Still have questions about how long a college essay should be? Let’s take a look at a few below.

We Have All of Your Questions Covered for How Long Should a College Essay Be.

Is a 500-word Common App essay too short?

A 500-word Common App essay is not too short, as it still falls well within the allowed 250 to 650-word range. Admissions officers care far more about the quality of reflection than the exact word count. If the student provides clear insight into who they are, how they think, and how they’ve grown, 500 words can be more than enough. However, when the essay feels rushed or underdeveloped, that’s a problem. As long as the story feels complete, personal, and meaningful, a 500-word essay is perfectly acceptable.

Is it bad if my college essay is exactly 650 words?

No, it is not bad if your college essay is exactly 650 words. While it is important to stay within the word limit, being exactly at 650 words is perfectly acceptable and even encouraged to ensure you’ve used all the available space to share your story. We’ve seen students go right up to the very last word on the limit!

How do I make my college essay stand out?

This is a great question, and the easiest answer is that it should be all about you. You cannot go wrong if you are writing it from your authentic frame of reference. Also, include a hook, which means grabbing the reader from the start. The best essays we have seen focus on deeper themes, show, do not tell; and write with the reader in mind. You are writing for an audience, so connecting deeply can be extremely effective. Happy writing!
